- Acai Berry: A new ingredient for fraudulent health claims
- By: CHARU LATA
Acai berry has been touted as the next super-food by various medical associations, and the statement is also backed with commercial interests of leading companies. It’s very likely that you have heard the claims about various fruit-juices: Blueberry juice fights Alzheimer's disease, cranberry wards off bladder infections, pomegranate halts prostate cancer. And, the more exotic the name sounds, the more expensive the fruit derivatives are.
“The king of good times” is how the nutritional properties of Acai berry are defined. Harvested in the famous Amazon rain forests of Brazil, Acai berries are a rich source of flavonoids. They have started taking up considerable space on grocery and health-food store shelves due to their antioxidant power.
Antioxidants found in Acai berries - such as vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium and plant (phyto) chemicals, destroy free radicals and unstable oxygen molecules that are formed during normal metabolism in human body. If left unchecked, the free radicals can damage cells and may lead to cancer, heart disease, cataract, arthritis and Alzheimer's disease.
It naturally follows that with the benefits of Acai berry growing the way it is – in terms of antioxidant power and in terms of the kind of confidence it has come enjoy from the consumers – the Acai berry products - Acai Pulp, Acai Smoothies, Acai Supplements, Acai Berry Juice, Acai Capsules, Acai Powder, will soon take up the role of the lead super food, pushing other breed of juices into the secondary position.
However, it is difficult to believe that everyone is selling authentic Acai berry products. Some manufacturers use high claims about the antioxidant measurements of their products, like it is 30 times healthier than red wine etc. That, at least, is sufficient to mislead less discerning consumers. There are very few companies that pay emphasis on imparting product knowledge. Acai Roots is one such company. Here, the products available are chosen by the experts. The products go through a touch-quality check and are processed by deep-freezing method to retain all the nutritional aspects. Products made from whole fruit, pulp and skin are best. By all means, companies that sell “concentrate” or “extract” should be avoided, as these processing techniques dilute certain properties of Acai Berry.
Requirement of antioxidants could change with time and lifestyle. So, just because a food has high antioxidant content doesn't mean it will translate into a health benefit - some antioxidants may not be absorbed and utilized in the body. If anyone has a doubt on the benefits of Acai berry, then he should check with the various researches available, as only an educated consumer would become a good customer!
