    By: DR.ANCA MARTALOG,N.

It has been established that in order to be healthy in this " toxic soup" we live in, one must " keep clean" by detoxifying on a regular basis, at least 2x/yr; in the spring and fall.

Detoxification does not have to be an unpleasant experience and it does not have to be performed only while on a fast.

The best approach is to detoxify gradually, over along time: this is why the introduction of a vegetarian diet in one's lifestyle only makes sense! As any other change, this will be a bit stressful at the beginning: the secret is to approach it with sense of adventure and exploration. In the beginning, the simple introduction of a few new dishes will start motivate you for persevere.

For those interested in becoming vegetarians,. but don't know how can to make the changes in our diet that will be most beneficial to our bodies, read on.

Some changes are easier to make than others, such as drinking less coffee and eating less red meat.

Many people are interested in becoming vegetarians, but do not know how to get started. Here are some tips on switching to a vegetarian diet:

Be prepared to stick to your vegetarian diet, especially when under stress or when running out of time. Familiarize yourself in advance with a few convenience foods, such as soups (e.g. minestrone, black bean, etc.), flavoured rice mixes (e.g. curried rice, beans and rice, etc.).

When going out, ask for meatless entrees. Most restaurants today have a few choices of vegetarian dishes; if they do not, you can request skipping the meat and adding more potatoes or rice to your plate.

The easiest way to find out what you like is to try different vegetarian foods in many of the international restaurants the Toronto area is famous for: Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Greek, Indian, etc.

Barbecues are very popular in the summertime, and you can take advantage of this. Did you know you can have many vegetarian foods taste even better by putting them on the barbecue? Veggie burgers and thick slices of marinated vegetables (such as eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, etc.) are good examples. Another alternative is shishkabobs of tofu and vegetables. -- You can even invite me to your veggie barbecue!

Take advantage of Toronto's multicultural society not only by going to different restaurants, but also by discovering the endless number of ethnic grocery stores. Many of them offer special vegetarian foods you may not have known existed. Middle-Eastern delis can satisfy your appetite with stuffed grape leaves, falafel and eggplant spreads. Italian markets offer a variety of wonderful homemade breads, sun-dried tomatoes and fresh pasta. Once you experience a few, you will be inspired and get many ideas for cooking with vegetarian foods.

At the beginning, you can start with dishes of brown rice, seasoned with herbs and lemon, sprinkled with chopped nuts or sunflower seeds.

Bookstores and libraries have a variety of vegetarian cookbooks you might find useful. Remember, doing research may prove a little boring in the beginning, but it will certainly pay off in the end.

Becoming vegetarian can be a lot of fun. It is a change of habit, therefore it requires some thought process. If it is done properly, it could be a very healthy lifestyle. It should be noted also that vegetarianism is not suitable for everyone and being a vegetarian doesn't necessarily mean you are healthy. Good advice from a professional health care practitioner is always indicated, in order to avoid the development of deficiencies and other problems later on.

In a case of cancer recovery or any other major illness, the vegetarian diet is a good "insurance" policy towards a speedier cancer recovery.
