  • Eyelid Lift: Is This For You?
    By: A AARONSON

Have you been wishing you could get rid of your drooping eyelids? Or have you always wanted to eradicate those large bags under your eyes? Amazing advances in medical technology over the past few decades have made it possible for you to fulfill these cosmetic dreams. With the aid of an eyelid lift, technically known as blepharoplasty, you can have younger, more alert looking eyes.

This surgery can correct several problem issues around the eyes. In addition to lifting droopy eyelids and removing large eye bags, it can also eliminate puffiness around the eyes caused by excess fatty deposits, and smooth out the skin and wrinkles around the lower eyelid.

An eyelid lift is performed by a qualified surgeon either in an outpatient facility or in a hospital. The procedure will take several hours, so you will be put under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Once the drugs have kicked in, the doctor will make an incision within the natural crease of the upper eyelid or just below the lower lash line for lower eyelid surgery. (The incisions are specifically placed to make them as unnoticeable as possible after recovery). The excess fat and skin will then be removed and the remaining skin will be stretched and sutured back together. Depending on the type of stitches used, they will dissolve on their own or be removed by the doctor 3-5 days after the operation.

Recovery from the surgery includes some pain associated with the accompanying swelling and bruising, but it can be managed by means of painkiller medicines, lubricating ointment, and cold compresses.

Having learned all this information, how do you know if an eyelid lift is right for you? First, you have to be in a generally healthy physical condition. Your facial tissue must be healthy and have good elasticity. Another requirement is that you be a non-smoker. If you do smoke you will be required to quit several weeks before the procedure. Another determining factor may be any serious eye or health conditions you have. You must consult and get an okay from the appropriate specialist before getting the surgery done if you have glaucoma, dry eye, a detached retina, thyroid disorders, cardio vascular disease, high blood pressure or diabetes.

An important issue to consider before getting an eyelid lift is whether or not you can afford the surgery. Most eyelid lifts will cost you between $1,000 and $4,000 completely out of pocket. Because these procedures are largely cosmetic in nature, most insurance companies will not cover the costs for you.

There are some risks also that may help you decide if this is right for you. After the surgery it is possible for you to experience dry eyes, some difficulty closing your eyes, bleeding, infection, and some undesirable scarring. You may also face some facial numbness (usually temporary), blood clots, and even the loss of eyesight in extreme cases. These risks are all reported to be very minimal and choosing a seasoned and competent surgeon will further decrease your chances of negative side effects.

An eye lift may be right for you if you have unwanted eyelid features and have realistic expectations about the results of the surgery. If it is right for you, a good eyelid lift will provide lasting effects and help you to look much younger and more rested.

You can get rid of the problem of droopy eyelids and remove the puffiness around your eyes with eyelid lift procedures performed by an experienced and certified Atlanta plastic surgeon. Get more information on eyelid lift and view before and after photos at http://www.swancenteratlanta.com/.
