Fever refers to an elevation in body temperature. Technically, any body temperature above the normal oral measurement of 98.6 F (37 C) or the normal rectal temperature of 99 F (37.2 C) is considered to be elevated. However, these are averages, and your normal temperature may actually be 1 F (0.6 C) or more above or below the average of 98.6 F. Body temperature can also vary up to 1 F (0.6 C) throughout the day.Fever and pain are the two most common--and for most people, alarming--signs of imbalance in the body. Fever, technically speaking, can be a very slight elevation above the "normal" temperature of 98.6º Fahrenheit, or a raging, fearsome soaring up over 105º. Temperatures above 106.5º are quite rare and usually occur only in conjunction with some form of injury to the brain. Fevers are usually preceded by chills, a mechanism the body uses to prod the thermal regulators into action to raise the temperature.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Aspirin Free Anacin, Aceta, Abenol) is an analgesic and antipyretic drug used to treat headaches, fever, minor pain, and muscle aches. It may relieve mild pain from arthritis, but may not affect the underlying inflammation and swelling of the joint.
Some side effects of acetaminophen include mild nausea, skin rash or hives, liver damage, and difficulty breathing. Acetaminophen does not cause the stomach irritation often associated with aspirin. This drug may be used in combination with anticoagulants. Reduce the dosage for children under the age of 12 years, and consult your pediatrician before administering to children less than 2 years of age.
There are several types of medications available for pain relief and to reduce fevers. If you need help deciding which over the counter pain reliever or fever reducer is right for you and your symptoms, you have come to the right place. Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). In English, that means that it helps reduce swelling (and pain) but it is not a steroid. Ibuprofen is great for sore muscles, sore throats and can also be very effective at bringing down fevers.
Minor episodes of fever or pain often do not require any treatment. However, in some cases a child’s discomfort can be substantial enough to require medical treatment Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are two of the most commonly recommended combination fever reducers and pain relievers suggested for treating children. Aspirin is one popular analgesic that should never be used in children. Though aspirin can be a powerful and effective drug, it also can be dangerous when used in children.
Nobody likes to see their baby in pain, but if you know the signs to look for and what you can do to help at least you can take some control of the situation and help relieve their discomfort. Since we have had childhood immunization programmers in the UK, you tend to hear less of children catching some of the more severe illnesses that used to be a problem, such as mumps and measles.
