  • Tooth Bonding Basics
    By: MELANIE C

Tooth bonding is often done to repair cracks, chips or gaps in the teeth, or when they are discoloured. It usually lasts for 10-15 years, but may require some small touch-ups within the first year or two. It is a simple procedure that needs no anaesthetic.

Bonding material is made up of various components and can be chosen to best match the shade of your natural teeth. It contains such elements as organic fillers such as glass or quartz, acrylic resin, photoinitiators, pigments and inorganic fillers. The dentist will usually roughen the tooth surface to be treated, apply an adhesive and then the bonding material. Using a special light hardens the adhesive and then the bond is smoothed and treated to make it look just like your natural tooth.

While bonding treatment is fairly expensive - $300/$600 per tooth - much of this can be recovered from your dental insurer, especially if the work was done to treat cracks or chips. A cosmetic dentist will have been more highly trained to apply bonding than your usual dentist. Sometimes the teeth do feel a little more sensitive after bonding work has been done. Many people feel that this is a small price to pay for having a beautiful smile. Get information on dental crown and dental veneers with d-spa dentists in Melbourne (http://www.d-spa.com.au).
