  • What is an Endodontic Abscess?
    By: MELANIE C

An endodontic abscess is an acutely painful abscess of the tooth and gum caused by infected pulp within the tooth. The infection spreads from the pulp inside the tooth to the soft tissue and bone of the surrounding area, and also the outside of the tooth's root. It can cause swelling around the gum, cheek, lip and neck area. Pain is felt on any pressure from biting or contact with food or liquids whether they are hot or cold.

The build-up of pressure within the gum will often cause the tooth to become loose and move partially out of its socket, thus causing more pain as it touches against the opposing tooth. In severe cases, the throat and breathing are affected and hospitalisation is necessary.

Treatment involves relieving pain and reducing the swelling as quickly as possible. The dentist must numb the area completely and drill a small hole into the tooth to allow the infection to drain. The abscess will require more than one treatment. Drainage will take place over some days, with antibiotics and painkillers prescribed either by the dentist or a doctor. Once the patient is more comfortable, then root canal treatment must be done on the affected area.
