While there is little doubt that long hair is, for many women, the essence of femininity, the standard long hairstyle parted in the middle with hair hanging evenly on either side is no longer the only popular look for long hair. Named for Aniston’s character, the Rachel remains a popular look for long hair long after it was introduced. The Rachel has a deceptively simple appearance, resulting from a quite complicated cut.
The Rachel works best for women whose hair reaches two or three inches past their shoulders, and is cut in a V shape from the back forward, so that the hair at the back is longer than the hair around the face. The Rachel also has the sides of the hair cut along the face to define its length from the crown to the ends.
Women love the versatility of the Rachel, which can be worn down or lifted in an upsweep for a more formal look.
The Tousled Look
The tousled look is in great demand because it works with any sort of long hair cut, but it does require that the hair be wavy. For women with straight hair, achieving the tousled look means using hot rollers, and for women with curly hair, it means doing some straightening. The tousled look is all about hair that falls in gently defined waves from its mid-length to its ends.
Most women with the tousled look wear their hair down, but will occasionally pin one side up with an attractive clip for a more elegant look. Once in a while you may see the tousled look tied back in a pony tail or piled up in a bun.
Bangs
Many women are convinced that bangs give them a more youthful look, so bangs have once again become an integral part of long hairstyles. These bangs are not tiny wisps of hair; they lie full and straight at or above the brow line, while the rest of the hairstyle hangs long and straight at the sides and back.
This long hairstyle is somewhat reminiscent of the Mary Jane hairstyle often seen on young girls, and lacks the versatility of the Rachel or the tousled hairstyle. But it does work well as both a bun and a pony tail, and is especially good for wearing in an upsweep with evening makeup and fine jewelry for formal occasions.
