  • Are Porcelain Veneers Right for Me?
    By: PATRICIA WOLOCH

Many people look at themselves in the mirror and find they are unhappy with their smile. If you are one of these people, you may be wondering whether porcelain veneers might help you achieve a beautiful smile. The answer is, yes. In most cases, porcelain veneers will give you immediate correction of cosmetic problems, but porcelain veneers are a relatively expensive treatment option and should not be used unless necessary.

    Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening is the first place to look for correction of cosmetic defects in your smile. If your teeth are discolored, it can make you look old and unhealthy. Dentist-administered tooth whitening, however, can lead to dramatic whitening of your teeth, as many as nine shades in one visit. If you have very thin tooth enamel, though, dental whitening may not help and can lead to tooth sensitivity.

    Tooth Chipping

In some cases, a chipped tooth can be made to appear more even and uniform with the other teeth by the use of enamel contouring. A safe, gentle solution that can make your teeth appear much better, enamel recontouring is a good solution for people with otherwise healthy teeth that have either been chipped or are slightly off in shape.

    Crooked Teeth

Although traditionally the only remedy for crooked teeth was old-fashioned metal braces, nowadays there are many possible remedies that can correct your crooked smile more quickly, less painfully, and without the embarrassment of traditional metal braces. This includes Invisalign plastic braces, as well as instant orthodontics with porcelain veneers.

All that and a Bag of Chips

Porcelain veneers are remarkable in that they can serve to correct all the above problems and more. Not only can they whiten, straighten, and even out your teeth, they can be used to lengthen, strengthen, and protect your teeth. It is the ability of porcelain veneers to correct all these cosmetic deficiencies at the same time that makes porcelain veneers worth the price. If your teeth are not only discolored, but also chipped, cracked, uneven, or crooked as well, then you should consider porcelain veneers as a solution.

Disclaimer: Porcelain veneers may not come with a bag of chips.
