  • Confessions of a Smile Junky!
    By: PATRICIA WOLOCH

She hates to admit it—but Susan B. is smile-obsessed.

“Every person I meet, every model I see in a magazine, every TV personality—gets the same scrutiny,” says the 34-year-old advertising executive. “I check out their smile—and compare it to my own!”

She explains that a career helping to create positive corporate images started her on a personal journey to spiff up her own image—in the mirror.

“Nowadays, no one can take the risk of letting themselves go,” she says. “Personal appearance is just as important as your resume. In fact, your looks get you respect in the intangible department—the way you are perceived. And teeth are essential in that department.”

In fact, she has developed a personal system for rating what she calls “Dental Beauty:”
•C is for color. Teeth that are light and bright reflect health and youth.
•P is for pearlescent. Teeth that reflect light radiate vigor and excitement.
•S is for shape. Teeth that are nicely shaped compliment facial structure.
•G is for great gums. Teeth that are framed by a tight, pink, graceful gum line project a value for hygiene and cleanliness.
•A is for alignment. Teeth that are straight, line up next to each other in a pleasing symmetry.

This kind of knowledgeable dental patient is well-known to many dentists treating today’s busy professionals. “Many patients come to us with a clear idea of what they want in their smiles,” says Dr. Daniel J. Deutsch, at the Washington Center for Dentistry, in Washington, DC. “Looking good for them means not only paying attention to diet, exercise and wardrobe—but also sporting a healthy and attractive smile. To them, it’s not only about vanity. It’s about success at work.”
