In the case where a person has lost one or two teeth due to accident or decay, but the root of the tooth is still healthy, then fitting a crown is an advisable option. A crown will look just like your natural tooth and will provide a strong and aesthetically pleasing alternative. When oral hygiene is good, then the crown will last up to 8 years or more, so long as ice or fingernails are not chewed.

If the nerve of the replaced tooth is not damaged, it may be that the patient will feel some sensitivity to hot and cold, and if so should use those toothpastes that are made especially for this problem. Another cause of sensitivity is if the crown has been set too high. This will cause a stab of pain when biting or chewing, but can easily be rectified by the dentist.

There are three types of crowns. Gold is the best, but many people feel it does not look good. Porcelain is the next best, but there is trouble fitting it between the gums and a large portion of healthy tooth may need to be removed. When porcelain is fused to a metal crown, some of the problems are eliminated. When crowns are fitted, the cement used as adhesive sometimes wears away and must be replaced. If not, decay and gum disease can result. Get information on dental crown and dental veneers with d-spa dentists in Melbourne (http://www.d-spa.com.au).
