- Home Remedies for Bad Breath
- By: JOHN MATHEW
Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a very common temporary condition caused by such things as oral dryness, stress, hunger (ketosis), eating certain foods such as garlic and onions, smoking, or poor oral hygiene.Almost everything we put into our mouth, particulary food and drink, can make it smell less pleasant. For the majority of people, the most frequent cause of bad breath is associated with bacteria that live in the mouth, particularly on the tongue. This bacteria can build-up as a result of poor oral hygiene and a lack of flossing.
Bad breath home remedies
Scrape your tongue with a spoon or one of those specially designed tongue scrapers. Get as far back on your tongue as possible to scrape off the offending bacteria.
Tea tree oil can also be used as your toothpaste or mouthwash. Put a few drops of tea tree oil on your toothbrush alone or top it with toothpaste, and then brush your teeth. You can use it as a mouthwash to help keep your gums healthy. Tea tree oil can also cure gum disease, which is possibly the cause of your bad breath. You can even soak your dental floss in tea tree oil.
Parsley leaves are rich in chlorophyll, nature's own deodoriser. Chew some leaves regularly for fresh breath.
Add 1 lemon juice with some sugar and salt to a glass of water and drink it often
Take a green cardamom and chew it after meals for a longer duration.
Chewing mint leaves will give you fresh breath, especially after eating certain foods that give odor to your mouth like raw onions and garlic. This might give you temporary relief, still it helps remove bad odor in your mouth.
Drink tea. Preliminary research suggests that compounds in both green and black tea called polyphenols may stop the growth of bacteria responsible for bad breath. Polyphenols may also prevent existing bacteria from producing malodorous compounds such as hydrogen sulfide. Both green and black tea have polyphenols. Get some tips on how to brew green tea.
Essential oils are plant extracts which means you’re getting a strong concentration of the plant’s benefits. Many essential oils have qualities that can fight bad breath. One home remedy is to add a few drops of tea tree oil to your toothpaste before brushing. For mouth wash, add one drop of Myrrh oil to warm water.
Used since biblical times, myrrh is one of the oldest bad breath remedies. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of powdered myrrh with 2 cups of water and simmer the mixture for about 30 minutes. Sip and enjoy the tea.
Home made mouthwash - Mix 100ml water with 100ml of peroxide. Add a pinch of salt and a pinch of baking soda. You can add essential oils or flavors if you wish like peppermint but it's not necessary. First use a tongue scraper or you can even just use your toothbrush to clean your tongue then gargle and rince your mouth out with the mouthwash you have just made. Use this each day or when needed.
