  • Implanting Confidence in a Smile
    By: PATRICIA WOLOCH

Do you sometimes feel unsure about your smile? Are you easily embarrassed, wishing to hide your mouth instead of spontaneously breaking into a grin or laugh? This is very understandable if you have missing teeth or loose dentures. There is a solution and it’s called dental implants.

    Anchor replacement teeth permanently

A new standard of care has emerged in dentistry to replace missing teeth. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots, implanted into the jawbone, which hold porcelain crowns. They give you a permanent new tooth, or several new teeth.

There are three types of implant:
•Root form – a small cylinder, set into the bone
•Plate form – a flat, narrow shape, also set into the bone
•Subperiosteal – a flat shape fixed to the top of the bone, beneath the gum tissue

The type chosen for you will depend on the size and density of your jawbone.

    Dental Implant Procedure

Although not complicated, the procedure has several steps and takes several months. The jawbone will grow in around the implant and incorporate it, and not until this is complete will the porcelain crown be attached to it. With a subperiosteal implant, the bone does not grow around it, so the procedure is shorter.

1.A special dental drill is used to create a space for the implant.
2.The implant is inserted and the gum tissue is sutured. The sutures are normally removed seven to 14 days later
3.The area is allowed to heal for three to six months, while the titanium implant integrates with the bone tissue (called osseointegration).
4.A titanium post (abutment) is attached to the implant, to support the new porcelain crown.
5.An impression is taken of the immediate area so a crown can be made to exactly fit the mouth. Porcelain will be matched to the surrounding teeth.
6.In the final visit, the crown is placed over the post and cemented into place.

Now the implant is one of many teeth in the mouth and it looks, feels, and acts the same as natural teeth!

Advantages over Other Tooth Replacement Options

Today’s dental implants offer many advantages:

    •Support aesthetically pleasing porcelain crowns
•Don’t sacrifice any tooth structure of neighboring teeth
•The crowns are easy to clean and maintain
    •Crowns function like natural teeth
•The implant integrates with the jawbone and fills the gap left by the missing tooth root, so the bone remains healthy

You can be confident that the new teeth will function and feel like natural teeth. You won’t have any unsightly gaps or loose dentures to contend with.
