If you've ever gone through the excruciating pain when suffering from kidney Stones, you'll appreciate that there are practical steps that you can take on a daily basis to help prevent kidney stones recurring.Firstly, and I know that you've probably heard this a thousand times before (but have you done it?), you simply must drink more fluids. Try to drink distilled water and avoid tap water if you can as this is often treated with chemicals that can build up in the body over time. If you drink mineral (bottled) water, look carefully at the mineral content and avoid those with a high calcium content.
Try to limit your caffine and alcohol content. If you do like a drink with your meal, red wine is now considered to be the most beneficial to your health, or a glass or two of beer. Avoid spirits and fortified wines (sherry, port etc..) at all times.
Next, you can increase your vitamin C intake by eating at least five portions of fruit a day. Include an orange, grapefruit and kiwi fruit in this routine as these have a very high Vitamin C content. Tomatoes (raw - not cooked) are also very beneficial to your system - try to include them regularly in your diet. Vegetables too should be taken on a daily basis and of course, salads if your palate prefers.
Have a glass of cranberry juice every other day as cranberry juice has been used to promote urinary tract health for many years. Mix it with water or orange juice if you find it too bitter for your taste.
Try to avoid antacids (rennie, tums etc..), as these have a very high calcium content and overuse of these medications can lead to calcium build-up in the kidneys. Try a teaspoon of Sodium Bicarbonate in a glass of water instead - it works and is a lot better for the health of your system (cheaper too!).
Just following these simple steps can dramatically improve your chances of avoiding Kidney Stones.
