August 4, 2008—SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA— New technology continues to make dental implants a more attainable and effective option for people interested in improving a less-than-perfect smile.San Jose Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Khalil Sage has used dental implants to recreate smiles that look and feel natural.
Dental implants are permanent replacements that are surgically placed in the jawbone.
“Dentists have been using dental implants for more than two decades, and the long-term results are favorable,” Sage said. “Patients who properly care for their dental implants can expect to keep them for a lifetime.”
Statistics show that 69 percent of adults ages 35 to 44 have lost at least one permanent tooth to an accident, gum disease, a failed root canal or tooth decay, according to the AAOMS (http://www.aaoms.org/dental_implants.php). By age 74, 26 percent of adults have lost all of their permanent teeth. By age 74, 26 percent of adults have lost all of their permanent teeth.
A Good Candidate
Patients who have lost teeth due to decay, disease or as the result of an injury typically are good candidates for dental implants, provided they are in good general health and have healthy bone in which to implant the necessary anchor.Heavy smokers, those who suffer from periodontal disease and haven’t had it treated and people who don’t practice good oral hygiene may not be good candidates for implants, Sage said.
The Process
Prior to any surgical procedures, a treatment plan for each individual patient is created by undergoing a medical and dental history and a complete oral examination. This process includes having X-rays taken. The first step in the process involves having the implant, which is made of titanium metal that fuses with the jawbone through a process called “osseointegration,” anchored to the bone, according to the AAOMS (http://www.aaoms.org/dental_implants.php).After the implant is fused to the bone, the top of the implant is exposed so the post can be attached to it. The post will support the replacement tooth.
During the final phase, Sage takes impressions so a dental laboratory can create the replacement tooth that will be secured to the implant.
