Toothache is something that most people are bothered by at some time in their life. There are several causes of toothache.- Sensitive tooth root. When oral hygiene has not been adhered to, the gums can recede and expose the bone at the root of the tooth. A visit to the dentist is usually needed for treatment, but using special toothpaste for sensitive teeth can help
- Eating too many sugary things that erode the enamel of the tooth causes tooth decay. The decay can go deep into the tooth, or it can be on the surface. In most cases there is pain, but sometimes there is tooth decay without toothache, that is why regular visits to the dentist are advised.
- An abscess in the tooth can occur when tooth decay is left untreated. The decay then moves up through the inner part of the tooth - the dentin - and into the root. It is very painful and root canal treatment is necessary. In some cases the tooth may need to be removed.
- Gum disease is another cause of toothache. Your gums will be very red and tender or painful. They will bleed easily when flossed or brushed if you have gum disease.
- Jaw disease or cracked teeth - both due to injury - can often cause toothache.
