  • Spinal Cord Stimulation
    By: HEMA SIRWANI

Spinal cord stimulation therapy is the most popular therapy for spinal treatment. In the pain relief treatment options, one which has been successful for so many chronic back pains lose is spinal cord stimulation.

In this spinal cord stimulation therapy, electrical impulses are used to block pain from being perceived in the brain. So the patient feels a mild tingling sensation instead of pain. A small wire which is connected to a power source is implanted under the skin and then low level electrical signals are transmitted through the lead to the spinal cord or to nerves to block pain signals from reaching the brain

There are two kinds of systems are available for spinal cord stimulation. The most commonly used system is fully implanted unit which utilize a pulse generator and a non- rechargeable battery which must be replaced over the time.

The another system for spinal cord stimulation relies on radio frequency and includes an antenna and transmitter, which are carried outside the body and a receiver which is implanted inside the body.

But spinal cord stimulation is not for everyone and it may be considered when conservative treatments and surgeries have not been successful and the patient does not have a pacemaker or other contraindications, he has had a successful trial period with the spinal cord stimulator.

Before a spinal cord stimulation system is implanted , physician recommend a trial period in which a temporary stimulator is surgically implanted to allow you to try the therapy for about 24 hours. If the system works for the patient, a permanent stimulation system can be implanted.

The next step is implantation using a anesthetic to numb the area, surgeon inserts the wire lead through a needle or a small incision. Once the lead has been implanted, the stimulation system will be activated and the surgeon will determine with the help of patient that how well the system works for the pain. You should avoid lifting, stretching, bending and twisting. However some of the light exercise such as walking is also encouraged to build strength and help relieve pain.
