With today's hectic lifestyles, it can be an enormous task to keep ourselves fit and healthy all year round. Every time we step outside of the front door we encounter someone who may be coughing and sneezing or running a fever. Whilst we determinedly try to dodge the ill and unhealthy for fear of catching their germs, there are times when our natural defence mechanisms simply let us down.
Our immune systems never go off duty, it is busy supporting our body's defence's day in, day out in a variety of different ways but we tend to not even consider our immune system unless there is a problem.
Each and every day, we combat thousands of germs that threaten to make us sick, many of which are inhaled as we go about our usual daily tasks. Even when we eat, we digest a large number of bacteria, which mostly tend to be killed off in our saliva or in our stomach acid, should it get that far. From time to time, if our immune systems are not functioning as it should be, we may get food poisoning.
Imagine if you and a friend were sat in close proximity to someone who had flu like symptoms-heavy cold, headaches, and shivering, aching limbs. You would probably try and restrict your physical closeness as much as possible; although there is no way of actually preventing these germs from attacking your defence system. A healthy immune system acts like sentries on guard duty, at the first sign of an ambush, the system prepares to do battle, if you wake up the next morning however, and you have succumbed to the germs but your friend is fine, this simply means that your friends immune system was functioning much better than yours at the time of your exposure.
There are a number of reasons why our immune systems cease to function as well but the good news is that it is easy to boost our defences in a fairly short space of time:
Diet
It is important that we fuel our defence systems by limiting the amount of junk food and instead eat a well-balanced diet. Make sure you have sufficient dosages of Vitamin c and if feeling below par, try Echinacea for a short time as this will help give your immune system that much needed boost.
Positive Attitude
Negative attitudes and emotions can impair an immune system quite readily too, so keeping a positive mind-set and increasing your zest for life, will help to restore flagging immune system levels.
Sleep
It is vital that we get 7-8 hours sleep a night as sleeping is our body's way of preparing to fight off the attack from infections. Going to bed at approximately the same time each night is advised-even at weekends.
Water
Drink plenty of water each day as this will help flush any toxins out of your system. And as much as you may love your caffeinated drinks, try to reduce the quantity, quenching your thirst with water instead.
Increase exercise
We all know that there are numerous benefits to exercising regularly but exercising for approximately 30 minutes three times a week will really help your immune system fight back.
Relax
Learn how relax the mind, body and spirit. Stress impacts our defence systems quite dramatically so ensuring that you take time out every now and then will make a big difference. Learn how to incorporate meditation into your life and visualize yourself back to good health. This is Joe Peters from http://allaboutbeinghealthy.net coming to you with an article about health.
