  • Far Too Many University Students Plans Are Ruined Because Of
    By: DONALD SAUNDERS

For many college students the last thing on their mind is health insurance as is shown in some recently published statistics that show that about one-third of all college students have no form of health insurance. Starting university is a costly business and simply finding the money you have to have and getting your college loans is hard enough, but you must also consider including suitable health insurance alongside everything else that you will need to have.

Of course you should start by looking at your parents' health insurance plan if this is applicable as it is possible that it will cover you while you are at university. You do however want to read the small print carefully because some plans will provide cover for while you are studying at university and others will not. Two things to look for especially are conditions concerning age and location.

A lot of health insurance plans will cover children up to the age of either 18 or 21 while you are at home and a number of plans will extend this age limit as long as you remain in full-time education. Many plans are however limited to providing cover within a defined geographic area and so, although you may meet the plan's age requirements, you might find that you will not be covered when you are studying away from home.

Should you parent's plan will not give you the cover you need then you will have to arrange your own student health insurance and will have to look for appropriate providers. Luckily, this is not too difficult and there are numerous insurance companies which provide plans which are specifically designed for college students. So, where do you start your search?

The first place that you ought to look is your own university as universities will normally arrange for their students to get cover at preferential rates. This does not necessarily mean that this is the best plan to meet your own needs and you will have to study the details to ensure that it meets your needs. Even so your own university is an excellent place to start your search and will often provide you with the best deal. One other thing to consider when looking at your own university is exactly what type of medical facilities are provided on campus. A lot of the bigger universities will have excellent medical facilities which are staffed 24 hours a day, while many of the smaller universities have far more limited facilities.

Outside of the university itself you can look to the many health insurers and a number of publicly funded organizations for cover. In addition, do not forget that there are several different forms of plan that are targeted at different groups of students. Short-term health insurance for instance might be attractive to many graduate students and can often be extended following graduation to cover you until you obtain a job and are eligible for an employer's plan. Additionally, there are supplemental plans which will provide cover for you for things such as pre-existing conditions which are generally excluded from standard student cover.

Health insurance today is a complex area and you will have to shop around to find a plan that both meets your needs and also fits your budget. Nevertheless, this is something which you should certainly not forget about because attending university is an expensive enough business in the first place and you do not want to risk your future or your money because you are not able to cover the cost of injury or illness.

MedicalHealthInsuranceToday.com provides information on a wide range of topics including low cost family health insurance plans and is also an excellent place to start your search for an excellent health insurance quote
